1.    Define computer virus. How does virus spread from one computer to other?

Ans: Computer virus is a piece of code which is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data.

Viruses can spread from one computer to other computer in many different ways. Viruses can be transmitted by email, in downloads from the internet, through network connections, by pen drives or by CDs, particular those that have been burnt on a computer infected by viruses.

2.   How can we protect computer from computer virus. Give any 4 methods.

Ans: We can protect computer from computer virus by applying following methods:

a.     Use antivirus protection and a firewall

b.    Get antispyware software

c.     Always keep your antivirus protection and antispyware software up-to-date

d.    Update your operating system regularly

e.     Increase your browser security settings

f.     Avoid questionable Web sites

g.    Only download software from sites you trust. Carefully evaluate free software and file-sharing applications before downloading them.

h.     Don’t use pirated software.

3.     What does a computer virus do?

Some computer viruses are programmed to harm your computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard drive. Others simply replicate themselves or flood a network with traffic, making it impossible to perform any internet activity. Even less harmful computer viruses can significantly disrupt your system’s performance, sapping computer memory and causing frequent computer crashes.

c.     Applications won’t start

d.     Cannot connect to the internet or it runs very slow

f.      Files go missing.

g.     Antivirus program disappears.

5.     What is antivirus software? Write any two examples of antivirus software?

Ans: Antivirus software is a computer program that detects, prevents, and takes action to disarm or remove malicious software programs, such as viruses and worms.

Examples: Avast, Avg, McAFree, Norton etc.
